Companies House Filing Changes Are Coming: Why Now Is the Time to Move to Xero

The government has confirmed significant changes to how companies file their accounts with Companies House, as part of reforms introduced through the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency (ECCT) Act 2023.

While the changes won’t take effect until 1 April 2028, businesses that act now will be in a much stronger position than those who leave preparation until the last minute.

At Satori Accounting, we’re already helping businesses future-proof their finances by moving to cloud accounting software such as Xero. As Northern Ireland’s first and leading Xero Gold Partner, we’ve seen first-hand how the right software can transform the way businesses manage their finances long before regulatory changes make it essential.

What Are the New Companies House Filing Requirements?

The government has confirmed that from 1 April 2028:

All Companies Must File Accounts Using Software

Companies will no longer be able to file accounts through Companies House’s web-based filing service or by paper submission. Instead, accounts must be submitted using approved commercial software.

Small Companies and Micro-Entities Must File More Information

Small companies and micro-entities will be required to submit a Profit and Loss account as part of their annual accounts filing.

To address concerns around transparency, businesses will have the option to opt out of having their Profit and Loss account published on the public register, although full details of this process are still to be confirmed.

Additional Technical Changes

Several other technical amendments are being introduced to improve transparency and strengthen the integrity of the UK company registration system.

Why Businesses Shouldn’t Wait Until 2028

The government has deliberately delayed implementation until April 2028 to give companies more time to prepare.

For many business owners, however, waiting until the deadline could create unnecessary stress and disruption.

Businesses that transition to software-based accounting now will have time to:

  • Learn the software at their own pace
  • Train staff and key stakeholders
  • Refine internal financial processes
  • Improve reporting and visibility
  • Avoid the rush that is likely to occur closer to the deadline

The reality is that moving to accounting software isn’t just about compliance. It’s about improving how your business operates every day.
